Saturday, August 18 10am-noon. Beyond Today Seed Gathering.
Gather Native seeds at Water's Garden and then go to the Riverbank and gather more. This is for our native seed archive, which we use to create new native gardens along the river. Meet at Sunnyside and Campbell in the garden at 10. Bring water/bagels/coffee if you can. Please email julie@BeyondToday.org if you'd like to come. It's very enjoyable work. See you then!
Want to have an organic neighborhood? Report large bodies of standing water to Beyond Today AND the city!
We've heard about several construction sites with large amounts of standing water in the neighborhood. Please investigate your neighborhood and email us about standing water you find. Take a photo and call 311 so the city will get it removed. Lincoln Square has already tested positive for West Nile in our mosquito traps, so we need to eliminate breeding sites both to reduce the chance of anyone getting West Nile and of the spray affecting everyone. Please schedule a little time for a walk and look for standing water. Some likely places include neglected swimming pools, old tires, construction pits, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and private catch basins. Standing water should be dumped, pumped out, fish added, or mosquito dunks are available at the hardware store.
Remember to wear mosquito repellent. A survey on 8/17/07 of the Lincoln Ave Jewel revealed only DEET and one picardin product for sale. Whole Foods and other stores often have other products. Beyond Today still has a dozen bottles of Oil of Lemon Euchalyptus repellent left, so come to an event if you live in the neighborhood and would like some. We fundraised for it, so a $5 donation would help us keep ordering more.
Our Organic Mosquito Management event on Wednesday was almost rained out, but the rain held off long enough for the brave souls who were at garden night to learn the latest news on West Nile and the spray. We are rescheduling the standing water search for next week. Stand by for more details.

Sunday morning Sauganash workday. Spend a heavenly morning in the forest and prairie doing good work with your neighbors.
Call if you are thinking of going. 773 931-3987 9AM-12. Call if you are interested. This is wonderful fun and a good family event very close to our neighborhood. Learn all about restoration, which is the care for our native ecosystem.
Beyond Today BP event covered in local paper
Residents accelerate protest against BP Great photo. Very nice article. We'd like to hear back from you. As most of you know, Exxon has a much worse reputation than BP. The lake issue has caught the attention of Chicago. Exxon has spendt millions to fund the companies which brought us the "breath of fresh air" ads which were aimed to confuse the public about global warming. Is anyone interested in helping us protest BOTH stations: the BP AND the Exxon station at Irving Park and Western? Should cause quite a dilema for people who need gas. Interesting. What do you think? Email beyondtoday@beyondtoday.org with your thoughts.
