Mosquito Repellent

Don’t allow mosquitoes to bite!

It’s our responsibility to wear repellent. Look for repellents which contain oil of lemon eucalyptus, other essential oils, or citronella. Whole foods and some grocery stores carry them. Tell your grocery store to carry them or go to the Beyond Today website to order. Avoid products containing DEET, which is quickly absorbed through the skin and has caused negative health effects. Laboratory studies have found that DEET can cause neurological damage, including brain damage in children.

Here's a list of the non-DEET mosquito repellents we've found:

Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Pump Insect Repellent (available online at REI)

"Oil of lemon eucalyptus, in addition to DEET and Picaridin, has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for effective protection against mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile virus. Repel Lemon Eucalyptus is the only personal insect repellent product commercially available in the US made with oil of lemon eucalyptus."

Here's a link to a Slate review of repellents. Not the largest sample size, but it's good reinforcement of the effectiveness of the oil of lemon eucalyptus.
